Audiometry
Audiometry is a hearing test used to measure how well you hear and to identify the degree and type of any hearing loss, and which ear is affected. The test is painless, involves no needles and is usually carried out with headphones in a sound-treated environment.
According to the World Health Organization, hundreds of millions of people worldwide live with hearing loss that requires rehabilitation, and this number is expected to rise. Recognising hearing loss early helps reduce its effects on communication, work and social life.
At MediHeart Medical Center in Morphou (Güzelyurt), hearing tests are planned together with an Ear, Nose and Throat assessment when needed. We welcome patients from Morphou, Lefka, Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta and Iskele, and from across North Cyprus.
What Is Audiometry?
Audiometry checks whether you can hear sounds of different pitches (frequencies) and loudness levels. The results are shown on a chart called an audiogram, which shows the softest sounds each ear can hear.
The results give the doctor information about:
- Whether hearing loss is present
- Its degree (mild, moderate, severe, etc.)
- Its type (conductive, sensorineural or mixed)
- Whether one or both ears are affected
- How well speech is understood
Tests Included in Audiometry
Pure-Tone Audiometry
Tones of different pitches are played through headphones and you signal each time you hear one. Air conduction testing checks sound travelling through the ear canal, while bone conduction testing uses a small vibrating device behind the ear to send sound directly to the inner ear. Comparing the two helps identify the type of hearing loss.
Speech Audiometry
This measures the softest level at which you can detect speech and how accurately you understand the words you hear. It is useful for understanding everyday communication difficulties.
Tympanometry
A short test of how well the eardrum moves and the pressure in the middle ear. It can help detect fluid in the middle ear, Eustachian tube problems or eardrum issues.
Acoustic Reflex Testing
Measures the reflex of a small middle-ear muscle in response to loud sound. It is usually assessed together with tympanometry when needed.
When Is Audiometry Performed?
- Reduced hearing or difficulty following conversations
- Needing to turn up the TV or phone
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
- Recurrent ear infections
- Suspected sudden hearing loss
- Working in a noisy environment
- Before and after ear surgery
- Assessing the need for a hearing aid
- Regular hearing checks in older age
Sudden hearing loss may need urgent assessment. If hearing drops suddenly in one or both ears, see a doctor without delay.
How Is the Test Done?
- Your symptoms and ear health history are discussed
- The ear is examined if needed, including for earwax that could affect results
- You wear headphones in a quiet, sound-treated setting
- Tones of different pitch and volume are played and you respond to each one you hear
- Speech tests and tympanometry are added if needed
The test is usually quick. Results are interpreted by the doctor and explained to you.
How to Prepare
- Avoid loud noise before the test where possible, as it can temporarily change hearing
- Let us know if you have a cold or an active ear infection
- Bring a list of your medicines and any previous hearing test results
- If you use a hearing aid, bring it with you
Audiometry and ENT Assessment
Hearing test results are most meaningful when considered alongside an ear examination and your symptoms. Depending on the cause, options may include medication, earwax removal, surgery or hearing aids. For more information, see our Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is audiometry painful?
No. You simply listen to sounds through headphones and signal when you hear them.
How long does it take?
It depends on which tests are needed; a standard hearing assessment is usually completed quickly.
Do I need audiometry for tinnitus?
A hearing assessment is often recommended for people with tinnitus, as it shows whether hearing loss is also present.
Does audiometry show whether I need a hearing aid?
Audiometry shows the degree and type of hearing loss. The decision about a hearing aid is made by considering the results, the ear examination and the difficulties you experience in daily life.
Can children have audiometry?
Yes. Children’s hearing can be tested with methods suited to their age and ability to cooperate; the doctor decides on the right approach.
Conclusion
Audiometry is a safe, painless test that shows whether hearing loss is present, how severe it is and what type it is. It helps guide the right treatment and follow-up for problems such as reduced hearing, tinnitus or ear fullness. At MediHeart Medical Center, audiometry is offered in coordination with ENT assessment for patients from Morphou and across North Cyprus.
