Nutritional Recommendations After Tooth Extraction

Nutrition and Care Guide After Tooth Extraction | MediHeart Medical Center

Nutritional habits play a major role in the healthy progression of the healing process after tooth extraction. As MediHeart Medical Center Dental Department, we have compiled what you should pay attention to during the first few days following the procedure.

What Should Be Considered in the First 24 Hours?

  • Avoid hot foods and drinks for the first 24 hours after the procedure
  • Prefer soft, cold, or warm foods (yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes)
  • Do not consume drinks with a straw; the suction movement can cause the blood clot to dislodge
  • Stay away from hard, crunchy foods and small particles that can break apart (such as chips, nuts)

Nutritional Recommendations for the First Week

During the first few days, soft foods that do not require chewing should be preferred, such as soups, mashed potatoes, eggs, smoothies, and boiled vegetables. Take care to chew on the opposite side of the extraction site.

What to Avoid

  • Alcohol and smoking: delay healing and increase the risk of infection
  • Very spicy and acidic foods
  • Hot beverages such as tea and coffee

Oral Care and General Recommendations

Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously during the first 24 hours; afterwards, gentle rinsing with warm salt water recommended by your physician can be performed. Take care not to touch the extraction site while brushing your teeth.
